How it began

So why does this website exist? Hopefully I can shed some light on the subject for everyone.

I began my Warhammer journey back in 2018. 8th edition 40k had just released and while attending a Yu-Gi-Oh club tournament day I spotted some dusty terrain and a table in a small side room. Not having any idea what it was all for I asked my friend:

"Oh, that's stuff for Warhammer 40k, I used to play it when we were still in school at a club in the church. I mostly played Lord of the Rings though."

My memory of said quote is now quite rough but it was essentially along those lines. I was bewildered to say the least! I had never heard of Warhammer and he had for whatever reason never thought to mention it in the many years we had known each other. This small offhand event led to what is now my main major interest in life, and at the time I enjoyed early 8th edition quite a lot. Unfortunately updates came throughout 8th that made the game very unbalanced to play (the CSM rules were essentially abandoned for the majority of the edition, half of my stratagems ceased to function!) and a change to allying rules which limited allies to 25% of total points was the final nail in the coffin, pretty much squatting my army (which was a 50/50 split of Nurgle Daemons and Chaos Space Marines). As the edition progressed, armies that weren't built to abuse certain rule interaction combinations became incredibly weak, which meant that armies made to look like an actual army usually sucked (unless they had a late release overtuned codex). I do not want to grumble too much about the past though as being overly negative about things is not something I want to do with this site, but this feeling of disenfranchisement was the first push of the stone that would roll down the hill.

Enter the Jungle

Around 2021 I stumbled upon a website known as "The Jungle", a fan site established in February 2000 by the brilliant Kenton Kilgore with his close friend and fellow "Jungle Guide" Patrick Eibel. Instantly I was enamoured by the writing style, the creativity, and the wealth of information about earlier editions of 40k (particularly 3rd through 5th). Kenton is not afraid to show his character from the highs to the lows and it gives you a view into how differently people back then approached Warhammer 40k than compared to now. You might be surprised by what is still true today however. Even twenty years ago people could be quite "beardy" with their "cheese", with many of the same complaints being still applicable to current gaming. It is a true time capsule and 99% of it is thankfully kept intact within the Internet Archive. I love his easy-going writing style, especially the little short stories featured in the campaign writeups. I was particularly enthralled by his "Blood Deserts of Auros IX" campaign, with his short epilogue story being a wonderful capstone to a legendary series. The Jungle has remained stuck in my brain ever since and eventually I felt ready enough to create something similar myself. Though I doubt I can live up to the legendary jungle, I hope I can evoke some of the same magic through my ocean planet; Verlamion-1. Maybe one day I can face the legendary tigers on the tabletop! I think that will stay as just a dream though.

Mr Kilgore still posts to this day, albeit on the new blog site form of The Jungle. Please leave some nice comments for him if you wish. He is also an established author now so check out his books if they interest you!

The here and now

I have always been a creative type. For something to "activate my neurons" it has to involve some form of creativity. Tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons have always attracted me more than videogames because they give you more freedom but as we all know it is difficult to find groups for such things. I dm'd D&D 3.5e online for a couple of years for my very close friends and while it was fun and let me vent the creative juices, all the required prep work did become exhausting over time. Warhammer lets me be creative at my own pace, and this website is part of that. It is very important to me that every aspect of this website contains a little part of myself in it, as such I try to make sure almost everything is either created by myself or a close friend. In a way, everything one creates contains a piece of their soul. Or at least I like to think of it that way!

I wanted the website to feel like it was a part of the era of 40k that I now love to play which is essentially 4th edition on release of the rulebook (4th ed with 3rd ed codexes). 4th edition is just 3rd edition anyway with the random White Dwarf rule changes collated into one book. As such the retro and amateur look of the website is on purpose, but it is a bit of a marmite thing. People either seem to love it or hate it! To speak briefly on the game itself, this period of 40k gaming feels relaxed, simple and balanced. Yes I know that people can abuse Iron Warrior Basilisk+Obliterator spam etc etc but from my experience playing so far the Codexes are easy to have fair games with. Also I am very happy that I can sit back and chill out while my opponent takes his turn, rather than worry about when to activate "gotcha" stratagems or reactions.

Creating the lore, characters and physical models for my Space Marines and then displaying it all on one website has been an immensely satisfying creative experience. I highly recommend anyone else give it a go! I really would say that I am not a professional by any means and truly anyone can achieve everything I've done.

I hope my word dump was an interesting read for you. If reading my site and The Jungle isn't enough, other good webzones to peruse that I found are http://ironhands.com/, www.karoath.com/ and http://chaptermasters.com/ultramarine/.

Thanks for reading! The next post should either be about something creative (probably one about casting resin) or about what went into my lore thought process for the Celestial Questors.
